A chip is a small crater in the outer layer of glass with air trapped underneath it, and that trapped air is what makes it travel. Every flex of the pane drives the crack a fraction further out of the crater, and the biggest flex most windshields ever take is thermal rather than mechanical. Folcroft sits low and damp, so a car left out overnight here frosts hard and holds it, and then somebody who is already late puts the defroster on full against a windshield at twenty-eight degrees. The inner face expands, the outer face does not, and a star that had been sitting quietly since October runs six inches while the car is still parked at the curb.
The fix is a vacuum-and-inject job and it is quick. The cavity is cleaned out, the trapped air drawn off under vacuum, clear resin pushed in under pressure until it fills every leg of the star, then cured hard and polished flush with the glass. What you get back is a windshield that is structurally whole again — the fractured layers bonded together, the crack no longer able to advance — and a mark you have to know where to look for. What you do not get is invisibility. Any shop promising that is overselling, and the difference between a good fill and a perfect one is not worth $250–$450.
