You come out at seven and there is a fan of blunt cubes on the asphalt beside the curb and a glittering mess across the seats. It looks like the car is ruined. It almost never is. Side and rear panes are tempered on purpose, so instead of breaking into blades they let go all at once into thousands of small dull pieces, and the damage stays with the one pane. The fitting is a known sequence: door card off, run channels and cavity cleared, the new glass set into the regulator and squared against the seal so it does not whistle at fifty-five on the way home.
The clean-out is the half that takes the time and it is the half worth judging a shop on. Cubes travel much further than seems reasonable — into the seat rails, down the belt line into the door skin, into the trunk well and the spare wheel recess, into the seat belt reel housing. They also come back: a car swept out once at the curb will still be shedding glass from under a seat runner a month later. So the interior gets vacuumed and then the door cavity does, with the card off, and both sit inside the $200–$500 rather than being billed on top. Bring the car in with the mess still in it.
