Springfield does more of its driving in car parks than any town near it. Baltimore Pike through the township is a mile and more of shopping centres, filling stations and lots, with traffic turning across lanes to get into them all day, and the practical consequence is that a lot of Springfield cars spend their time manoeuvring at five miles an hour surrounded by other cars doing the same. That is where the damage happens: a door swung into a quarter light, a trolley rolling into a wing, a stone flicked up by somebody cutting across an aisle. It is unglamorous damage and it is a large part of what we replace from here.
At home the picture is completely different. The residential half of Springfield is postwar, split-levels and colonials with driveways, garages and mature planting, so cars sleep off the road almost without exception and overnight break-ins are a small part of the picture. That also makes Springfield one of the easier places for the van to work: room on the drive, dry ground, and a car that is not going anywhere for the morning anyway.
