Tempered glass is made with its skin in compression and its core in tension. That is what makes it safe and what makes failure total: break the skin anywhere and the whole pane lets go at once. The pieces travel further than anyone expects. Most drop straight down inside the door and settle around the regulator and the lock rods, on top of the drain slots at the bottom of the shell. The rest end up in the door pocket, the slot the seat belt retracts into, under the seat rails, and on a back glass the trunk well and defroster vents. Cubes in a belt retractor stop the belt pulling smoothly. Cubes over the drain slots stop the door draining at all, so rain collects against the inner panel and rusts it from inside through a Delaware County winter. Vacuuming the seat is the part anyone can do at home; emptying the shell takes time, and it is why this is not a fifteen-minute swap.
With the cavity clear, the rest of a door glass is mechanical rather than adhesive.
