There are seven or eight pieces of glass on an ordinary car, and they are not interchangeable in any sense that matters. The windshield is laminated — two sheets bonded either side of a plastic interlayer and glued into the shell — so it cracks and still holds together, and replacing it is an adhesive job. Door, quarter and vent glass is tempered: heat-treated to break into blunt cubes rather than blades, and fitted mechanically rather than bonded. Back glass sits in between, tempered on most cars but urethaned into the opening like a windshield, which is why it carries a cure time that a door window does not. Sunroof and moonroof panels are a category of their own, worth naming on the phone rather than calling the glass on the roof.
