Upper Darby is not one place, and the glass work reflects that. Around 69th Street the El, the trolleys and the buses all terminate within a couple of blocks, and the traffic is constant, slow and full of people stepping out from between parked cars; the rowhouse blocks behind it have no driveways at all and park nose to tail on both sides. Out toward Drexel Hill the streets widen, the twins get drives and garages, and the parking problem quietly disappears. A car kept in one half of the township lives a completely different life from a car kept in the other.
For the dense half, the call is nearly always the same and it is nearly always urgent: a rear door window gone overnight, glass across the seats, and a car somebody needs for work in the morning. Around 69th Street the transportation centre gathers the El, the trolleys and a stack of bus routes within a couple of blocks, and the surrounding streets are slow, crowded and full of pedestrians all day. West Chester Pike runs out from that corner as a fast four-lane road with a patched surface. Garrett Road cuts across the middle of the township, and Lansdowne Avenue heads south toward Darby, which is the road that brings people down to us. The rowhouse blocks off Marshall Road and around Bywood are as tight as anything in Delaware County, with no off-street parking and cars nose to tail from evening onwards. One: overnight break-ins on the blocks with no off-street parking, which covers most of the eastern half of the township. It is almost always a rear window on the kerb side of the car. Two: the sheer density of moving traffic near 69th Street, where mirrors and quarter glass meet buses, delivery vans and other people's car doors at low speed all day long. Three: West Chester Pike, a fast road with a beaten-up surface and heavy traffic, where a stone off a tyre at forty-five will star a windshield without warning. Four: the squeeze on the rowhouse streets, where passing a double-parked car with inches to spare is how a wing mirror ends up through somebody's quarter window.
Lansdowne Avenue is the through line: take it south from Garrett Road, past Mercy Fitzgerald, down into Darby, then join Chester Pike and follow it through Sharon Hill down to Folcroft. 448 Primos Avenue is a turn off the Pike, about five miles and fifteen minutes, longer at the 69th Street end in the afternoon. From Drexel Hill, cutting across to the Blue Route and coming down to MacDade Boulevard is often faster than working your way through Darby.
