What you do in the first ten minutes changes how the rest of it goes. Leave the loose glass where it is rather than sweeping it down into the door, because cubes pushed into the cavity are the ones that come back to haunt the new pane. Do not touch the window switch: fragments sitting on the regulator carriage will jam the mechanism or cook the motor. Photograph the car as you found it if there is an insurance claim coming, take out anything worth taking, and cover the opening with heavy plastic taped to painted bodywork rather than to the rubber seal. Then call with the year, make, model and which window went, so the right pane is in hand before anybody drives anywhere.
The fitting is the short part. The pane clamps to the regulator carriage and seats into the felt run channels, the belt-line seals go back on, and the door is reassembled. The clean-up is the part that decides whether you notice this job again. Cubes end up on the floor of the door, wedged in the seat runners, ground into the carpet pile and, from a back window, spread the length of the parcel shelf, and anything left behind grinds against the new glass every time the window travels. A car sitting on a garage pad behind the twin gives the van somewhere to stand off the traffic entirely, with room to open the door fully and get a vacuum hose into the bottom of the cavity, which a curb on a through street never does. Two local caveats: alley width varies block to block, and trash collection days can block them outright, so mention both when you book.
