Back glass is the pane that catches people out, and on a wagon, hatch or SUV it is also the one most likely to go. It is rarely plain glass. There is usually a defroster grid printed across it with tabs that have to meet the harness properly, often the radio antenna printed alongside, sometimes a wiper spindle through it and a high-level brake light sitting above. Get the variant wrong and the grid does not heat, the radio picks up nothing, or the wiper does not sit right — which is why the part is settled against the VIN rather than the badge, and why the tabs are connected and tested before the car goes anywhere.
