A broken side window is two problems and most people only see one. The pane is the obvious one and it is straightforward. The second is what the pane turned into. Tempered glass collapses into thousands of small blunt cubes under pressure, and they do not stay on the seat — they run down inside the door skin, into the run channels the window travels in, into the bottom of the door where the drain holes are, and into the mechanism itself. Fit a new pane over that and every single time the window goes up or down it drags glass against glass and against the regulator's cable or scissor arms. Six months later the window is scratched and slow; a year later the motor gives up.
So the job runs in the opposite order to what people expect. Card off first, cavity emptied and vacuumed, channels cleared and checked, then the new pane fitted to the regulator and squared against the seal so it does not whistle on MacDade at forty-five. The cabin gets done at the end — seat rails, carpet, the belt reel housing, and the trunk well if it was back glass. The one thing worth asking you not to do is clean it out yourself beforehand: a household vacuum drives fragments into carpet pile where they are far harder to lift, jams on the bigger pieces, and cannot reach inside a door at all, which is where most of the glass actually went.
